Organized Panel: Protest and Civil Society under Far-right Dominance

Panel Chairs: Sebastian Haunss, Priska Daphi, Larissa Meier, Pál Susánszky

Far-right parties and movements are gaining influence in many regions of the world. In some places they already have become governing parties, in other places they remain outside the formal echelons of power but still have become important political and societal actors.

Their presence not only shapes institutional politics, it also affects protest dynamics and influences interactions within civil society. In our panel at this year’s conference of the Institute for Protest and Social Movement Studies (ipb) we aim to explore these transformations. We are particularly interested to learn how the increase in far-right influence and power affects the protest and the civil society arena: How does the presence of strong far-right parties influence the activities of protest and civil society actors? Does it decrease or increase protest activity? Is the effect similar across issues or sectors or are some sectors (e.g. labor, NIMBY issues, education) less affected than others (e.g. migration, LGBTQI rights, environment). Does it make a difference whether the far-right party is populist or extreme-right? Does an increase in far-right threat enable or inhibit cooperation between protest and/or civil society actors? We invite papers that address these and other related questions. We particularly welcome comparative works but also consider single case studies.

The deadline for submitting abstracts for contributions to organized panels is May 15, 2025.

Proposals can only be submitted via the online form (http://unihb.eu/ipb_conference_2025). Please mention the panel title and panel chairs in your submission.
